In Finland, the comprehensive schools provide basic education for lower levels and their tasks include both teaching and a broader educational role. Their objective is to provide each pupil with the opportunity for diverse growth and immigrants and learning and for development of healthy self-esteem. All comprehensive schools aim to provide good basic skills and knowledge and sufficient all-round learning. Ressu is a public school and is managed by the City of Helsinki.
The school was originally established in 1731. The current school building was built in 1859, and renovated in 1956-1957. The air conditioning system was renovated in 2006, but has since malfunctioned again with no further renovations planned. Ressu became a comprehensive school in 1975.
During World War I, the school building served as a military hospital. German airplanes bombed the school's play ground during the World War I, with approximately 14 fatalities.
In mid-September, 2011, a home-made bomb was found in the men's bathroom at about 8:53 AM during the first break by one of the students in grade 9. Police are still investigating the matter, and are glad the bomb was found and properly defused before any explosion took place.
